PADI Divemaster Program

padi dive master

As the entry to professional levels in diver training, the PADI Divemaster course plays a pivotal role within the PADI System of diver education. Those who join the PADI Divemaster ranks assist instructors with training student divers. They supervise diving activities for certified divers, snorkelers and skin divers. Divemasters strongly influence the safety and fun divers enjoy during training and diving. Many PADI Divemasters are looking ahead, gaining professional experience they will apply as PADI Assistant Instructors and Open Water Scuba Instructors.

The PADI Divemaster course is designed to help candidates develop exemplary diving skills, rescue skills, and professional-level knowledge of dive theory. Candidates also gain competence as a certified assistant, develop dive management and supervision abilities and learn how to independently conduct specific PADI programs.

The PADI Divemaster course has three components– knowledge development, water skills and stamina assessment, and practical application. The Knowledge Development Module establishes the foundation candidates need as professional-level divers and for continuing on to the PADI Assistant Instructor and Instructor levels. There are 12 Knowledge Development Topics and eight Divemaster Exams.

The Waterskills and Stamina Module develops candidate skill to the role model level appropriate for demonstrating to student divers, and to prepare for higher training levels. The Stamina Assessment and Development portion evaluates basic swimming skills, In the Practical Application Module, candidates put into practice skills typical of a divemaster.

The Instructor Exam ( IE )

padi exam

The purpose of the PADI Instructor Examination is to evaluate if an Instructor candidate’s knowledge and skills are sufficient to earn a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification. The IE is an evaluative program that tests the instructor candidate’s teaching ability, dive theory knowledge, water skill level, understanding of the PADI System and attitude and professionalism. The goal is to objectively evaluate the instructor candidate’s ability to meet the certification criteria. PADI IEs are standardized evaluations that are conducted by Instructor Examiners from PADI International Offices. The IE location, testing environment and evaluation sessions are selected to ensure the most conducive setting possible for assessing instructor candidate abilities. An instructor candidate who meets the IE performance requirements earns a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification (as long as all other prerequisite requirements are met).

The IE is conducted over a period of two days

To enrol in a PADI Instructor Examination, an individual must:

1. Successfully complete an OWSI program or IDC within 12 months of the start date
of the IE.
2. Have documentation of at least 100 logged dives including experience in deep, night and navigation diving.
3. Present an Instructor Certificate of Completion that has both the OWSI/IDC completion date and dive experience sections signed by a PADI Course Director, OR present an IE Certificate of Participation indicating previous attendance at an IE and which modules
need to be repeated.
4. Present an IE Enrolment form and appropriate IE fee.
5. Present a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past 12 months indicating that the candidate is fit for diving. The physician signing the form is not to be the applicant.

Our Course Director and staff will make every effort to prepare you for the IE. We are confident when we say that if you have met the requirements in the IDC, we believe that you will be well prepared for the examinations. We would not send you if we did not believe you were ready.

TIP: It’s worth noting that more people fail at the IE on the theory exams than on anything else. So please remember that self study and preparation is the key to your success.
